A city in development
In the 17th century, Amsterdam experienced its Golden Age. Through international trade, the city grew into a major trading center. Ships from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas brought goods such as spices, silk, timber, and grain to Amsterdam’s ports. The founding of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1602 played a major role in this development, making Amsterdam an important hub for international trade.
As the city grew, so did its population. To make room for homes, warehouses, and trading offices, Amsterdam expanded. During this period, the Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht were constructed, creating the canal ring that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
History still visible
Anyone walking through Amsterdam or taking a canal cruise can still see many traces of the 17th century. Along the canals, you’ll find warehouses and bridges that have been part of the cityscape for centuries. The Jordaan also emerged during this period as a residential neighborhood for craftsmen and workers. It is precisely this combination of history and modern-day Amsterdam that makes the city so special.
